When we start a new job, we are all full of so many emotions. The joy of getting the job and the excitement of learning something new or doing something interesting. Maybe some are scared to meet new customers, co-workers, or having to learn how a new company does things.
I started working with IMV Technologies in March of 2020. When I interviewed for the job, a pandemic and shutdowns weren’t anywhere on my radar. I was so excited when they offered me a position and was ready to begin but shortly after, COVID began being a word I would hear daily.
Let’s go back to March 2020 and think about all of the uncertainty and mixed emotions we all had when we were told to stay at home because of the COVID pandemic. Wear a mask if I have to go somewhere and stay at home otherwise? What is this? Will I be ok, will my family be ok, what things do I need to stay home for a month or longer? We all had those concerns about the pandemic but for me, I also had the added questions of what is expected of me at my new job.
March 16, 2020, I arrive at our office to start my first day and am not sure what to expect as I had been told to wear a mask and not shake hands with people. I went from thinking I would be introduced to everyone and get to walk around and learn about them and the company to basically being told names and exchanging waves while everyone was running around and answering phone calls. “What did I get myself into?” I asked myself.
The year of 2020 has been one that I will never forget for many reasons other than the pandemic. I started a new job, I moved homes, and my priorities changed. We all had to stay flexible, and we all had to learn new ways to communicate and adapt to our never-ending changes in the world.
The pandemic is never something I want to go through again, as we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel, but it is something that I was forced to learn so much from and realize what my priorities are. I pray for those who were so greatly impacted by the pandemic and I pray for the change to what our new normal will be. I will always be thankful for the patience and amazing work ethic of my coworkers as they helped me transition into my role with IMV Technologies.
